Rain, rain and more rain
Following on from my previous blog, and much to my distress, the weather forecast was right and torrential rain hit the Knockhill race circuit in Scotland during last weekend's Harley-Davidson XR1200 Trophy. Although I hoped the forecast would be wrong, I optimistically packed summer dresses and flip-flops, along with my boots and jeans (but left them in my case so as not to jinx anything).
To my delight, Friday was lovely. I had my flip-flops on and loved the sun however; it turned very windy on Saturday - I have never experienced wind like it! The support posts of our 18ft marquee were pushed inwards and started to lift the floor which worried us all slightly... Nevertheless, once we got all the bikes in and our free practice was underway, we could see racing was going to be very exciting with only half a second between the top six riders.
Qualifying went well and the bikes where put to bed for the evening. Then came Sunday…. I woke up, looked out the window and there it was….rain! The boots, jeans and a hoodie made an appearance for the first time that weekend. To be honest I did think it would just blow over - until torrential rain hit the circuit.
Racing was initially delayed but then it was our turn for warm-up. Everyone went out, but a few racers did not complete the session due to water on the track. From then on, it was a waiting game to see if the weather would clear up... But more rain came and eventually the H-D team and riders made the decision to stop for the day and go home.
It wasn't a great experience for my first time in Scotland as well as my first race event at the Knockhill circuit…. fingers crossed for sun at Brands Hatch in August!
