Another fine mess
It’s summer holiday time and my advice is simple: “act global, drink local”. I’ve been an advocate of this from my student travels right through to my current family holidays with the kids.
I’ve always been able to find out more about a particular place through visits to bars, pubs and restaurants than I have in guide books. Nowadays, the time I spend in such hostelries is somewhat limited, so I look to the local breweries and vineyards for a taste of local life.
This year we’re off to Cornwall and I’m eager to find out if there’s as many beautiful beer brands as there were in the Lake District. As well as picking up personal recommendations, I was amazed at the choice in supermarkets and specialist off licences – do they do anything else in Cumbria but drink?
As well as tasting some of the best real ale I’ve had in a long time, I was intrigued by the brands and the packaging design (always working even when away from PR and advertising in Lincolnshire!). For the record (please see the photo above)…
My favourite beer: close call between Cumberland Ale (Jennings) and Tag Lag (Barngates c/o the legendary Drunken Duck Inn)
Best packaging/design: anything by Dent (they all look similar to Aviator shown)
Best name: Another Fine Mess (Ulverston)… good enough for a chapter in my autobiography!
