Singing star 1
As part of the entertainment at last week’s career celebration dinner, James Toseland played three songs on a Yamaha piano as a tribute to family and friends. He firstly sang a song that he had written for his mother and followed that up with one that he had penned for his grandmother.
The emotion was obvious in James’s voice and body language, especially after his grandmother decided to join him on stage.
Finally, James played a tune that was very much familiar to us all – the one that he played at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony in 2008. Murray Walker certainly remembered that night with some affection as he recalled that he had been sitting beside James throughout the ceremony and described the rendition as the most memorable, spectacular and surprising performance by a British sports star in the history of the annual event.
It was a fitting contribution to an evening that confirmed the end of one part of James’s career – and the start of a new life in music.
